Hello Everyone,
The weather here is beautiful today and makes it easier for those who are sleeping in their cars and on cots. Today we found a grocery store about ten miles away that had just reopened and picked up a few things. When we came out we stopped a young couple with four little children to ask if they needed quilts or toys. They said no they needed a place to live.
Tom and Dennis worked at cutting trees and moving wood again during the day. Terri and I went up to a grocery store parking lot where FEMA has a huge dome tent set up to feed people. Right now they are feeding about 300-400 people at each of three meals a day. The people that are working here are primarily what you might classify as hippies, dreadlocks, piercings, tribal clothing and flip flops. All young, in their 20's, and absolutely amazing. There are dishwashing tanks set up, cooking tents, and it looks like no one in charge and yet everything gets done. The philosophy is that you do what ever needs doing. Terri and I are called sister and mama interchangeably by the group. Todays lunch was fried rice with eggs and veggies, teriyaki chicken or hamburgers, green salad, bread, milk or water. After lunch we washed down tables, cleaned up and then cut several bushels of squash into chunks for tonight's dinner. This center also has a food distribution center where people can come and get groceries. We then met the met and worked at the shelter painting until 9. A long day but a good day.
We are learning what things we should be sending out to the relief efforts. Clothing is in abundance. People need everything for their homes, pans, pots, dishes, towels, bedding, dishes, etc. A suggestion for you, package clothing in zip up plastic bags and label them with sizes, etc.
