Today Christine finished sewing curtains with fabric we had. Tom hung the rods and they are up. We'll finish the rest at home and ship them down.
The deadline is passed for blue roof tarps and clean up sign up. If you haven't asked for help by now you are on your own. Those people who have not yet come back are SOL. Many people 10 weeks after Katrina are still living in tents waiting for Katrina trailers. We worked at POD today giving out supplies. People come up and beg for blankets and pillows. Towels are a very hot commodity, as are wash clothes. Same for dish towels, pot holders and all the other things we take for granted. It is so sad! We feel like we have done so much and yet we hardly see a dent in what needs to be done.
The men cut 15 big boards up into little boards and turned them into window sills in Hope Haven windows. They are looking so good. Friday the Social Services people will not be here so we are going to hit it hard and then head out on Sat early. We have 1300 miles to home and hope to get in late Sunday night.
Tom got a jolt (mild) from some electric lines that were lying near the shed he and Dennis jacked up and moved back onto it's foundation. Terri and I had both handled those lines last week when we cleaned out that shed and children had been playing out in the yard several times this week. The director called the electrician and he came and checked it. Two 110 volt live lines were laying there. We could have been fried! Most of the people living here are dealing with the same thing.
Today a truck pulled up and dropped off dozens of brand new blankets for people who come into Hope Haven. Instead of handing them out to those that need them the Social Services people were grabbing them left and right. We think it should be about need not greed. Some of them needed them, some did not.
Everything here, hand outs, free food, all will be done in two weeks and people will be on their own. Thanksgiving day is "it's over day". If you could see this area you would be appalled. Most of these people don't even have FEMA trailers yet. They are going into the winter living in tents. We are told that it is snowing in Arbor Vitae and we'll think of these people here as we throw another log on the fire.
